How to Compare Bible and Science?

 

Ever since the onset of the Enlightenment era, there has been an apparent disconnect between the Bible and science. Many people argue that these two fields are at odds with one another - while science relies on empirical evidence, testing and observations to form conclusions about the universe, the Bible, on the other hand, emphasizes faith and the interpretation of sacred, often metaphorical texts. However, these contrasting views can be merged and viewed in a different light that facilitates understanding. In this post, we will navigate through some perspectives that will allow us to compare the Bible and science harmoniously.

1. Acknowledge

 Their Distinct Goals Science aims to explain natural phenomena using testable explanations, providing us with how and when something happens. Itexamines the nature and history of the universe in great detail. Conversely, the Bible answers questions like why we exist and what is our purpose, focusing on the metaphysical aspects. Thus, both have their roles to fill that do not necessarily overlap or negate one another.

2. Contextual Interpretation of Bible 

Some perceived conflicts between the Bible and science stem from interpreting biblical text in a literal manner. However, understanding the historical, cultural and linguistic context of these scriptures can provide a more profound and nuanced interpretation that often harmonizes with scientific truths. The seven days of creation in Genesis can be understood as symbolic periods rather than literal 24-hour days.

3. Bible’s Influence on Modern Science 

 Despite seeming contradictions, we can't ignore the fact that modern science was birthed in a predominantly Christian context. Renowned scientists such as Galileo, Newton and Kepler were believers of the Bible. Many of them saw no discord between science and the Bible; instead, they believed that by studying the natural world, they were revealing more about God's magnificent creation. 

 4. God as the Ground of Science

 Science involves principles like orderliness, predictability, and logic that cannot be accounted for by science itself. These attributes reflect the order, consistency and intelligence of God, the creator, as conveyed in the Bible.

5. Miracles and Science

 While the concept of miracles described in the Bible contradicts science’s emphasis on consistent, natural laws, they are not a reason for conflict. Miracles by their definition are exceptional acts of God, who, as the author of natural laws, has the authority to alter them. 

 6. Faith and Science 

 Science asks us to believe in what can be empirically proven and repeated, while faith calls us to trust in truths that often transcend our limited understanding. However, in a sense, science also calls for faith – faith in the scientific method, in unseen entities like electrons or black holes, and in theories such as the Big Bang or evolution. Thus, faith and science are not necessarily dichotomous.

While differences between the Bible and science do exist, they are often amplified by the conflict-driven narrative prevalent today. Rather than antagonists, these two different ways of understanding reality can co-exist and even complement each other in enriching our perception of the world. Recognizing their unique contributions to our comprehension of existence, we must strive for a respectful dialogue that celebrates their distinctive strengths rather than promoting a dichotomy. As John Polkinghorne, a renowned physicist turned Anglican priest, aptly stated, The world is not full of items stamped ‘made by God’ — the Creator is more subtle than that — but there are two locations where His signature is indeed to be seen. They are in the deep structure of the physical world and in the human consciousness of that world.
